Session 1 Discussions

How to promote / support technology related faculty development at NLU?

  • Informal avenues tend to be more relaxed, provide opportunity to play.
  • offer more 'informal sessions' for faculty to get together, share what they are working on, then provide some hands-on opportunities.
  • Formal PD / training is less organic.
  • Use technology in personal lives (playful). Skills and knowledge will carry over to professional lives.
  • Organize a formal approach to create a module of a course without given a time limit with flexibility
  • Focus on a personalized approach to participating in the course design
  • Link this to the professional development goals for individual growth and load
  • Understanding what faculty members would like to do and design motivating menu of options
  • Develop a systematic approach in expecting each faculty member would have demonstrate technology goals with professional development
  • Thoughts around offering / developing personal projects as informal training sessions

Faculty Needs:

  • Time to practice, learn, play
  • use of NETS-T for PD framework (self-assessment) to set technology PD goals for year (measurable)
  • assessed annually during review
  • create PD sessions / tech sharing during program or department meetings
  • faculty need to be pro-active about own learning; develop PLN
  • offer "Open Lab" for faculty to learn tools, practice. could be the "personal projects" idea.
